About the Artist

Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman was a Dutch artist and printer from Groningen who transformed his small press into a hub of modernist experimentation. In the late 1920s and 1930s, Werkman pioneered innovative techniques in inking, stamping, and overprinting, anticipating trends in graphic design and abstract art.

His legacy bridges Constructivist geometry and the tactile qualities of handmade prints, making his work significant for those interested in early twentieth-century European modernism.

The Artwork

Rectangular surfaces emerged during a period when European artists were exploring the expressive potential of pure form. Rather than depicting a narrative, Werkman uses the rectangle—a fundamental element of modern design—to investigate balance, rhythm, and visual harmony.

This approach was shaped by the influence of print culture, where posters and typographic layouts helped define modern aesthetics. For more in this vein, discover our abstract wall art collection.

Style & Characteristics

The artwork features a composition of stacked and interlocking rectangles, creating a dynamic, architectural arrangement. Bold areas of red, blue, yellow, and black contrast with the soft texture of the hand-printed surface, revealing subtle irregularities that emphasize its artisanal origin.

The overall effect is energetic yet precise, reflecting the rational optimism of the machine age. As a vintage abstract poster, it combines the clarity of graphic design with the warmth of studio printmaking, resonating with the spirit of Bauhaus inspired posters.

In Interior Design

This fine art print serves as a striking focal point in living rooms, offices, or entryways where clean lines and open space are valued. Its geometric structure enhances mid-century, Scandinavian, and contemporary interiors, anchoring a gallery wall without overwhelming other works.

Pair it with warm woods, matte black accents, and simple textiles, or echo its bold palette with cushions and ceramics. For a softer complement, explore our minimalist art prints for understated balance.
