About the Artist

Joaquín Torres-García was a pioneering Uruguayan modernist who worked across Barcelona, New York, Paris, and Montevideo, connecting the European avant-garde with Latin American artistic thought. In the early 1930s, he developed Universal Constructivism, an approach that sought to create a universal visual language through structure and symbolic forms, moving beyond personal narrative.

Torres-García’s philosophy was rooted in the idea that art could serve as a bridge between cultures and epochs, using geometry and abstraction to express shared human values. His work from this period reflects a desire to find order and meaning in a rapidly changing world.

The Artwork

Created in 1933, Structure with shapes emerged during a time when artists sought new foundations after years of upheaval. Torres-García responded by constructing a visual system reminiscent of architectural plans or conceptual maps, offering a sense of stability and universality.

This artwork does not depict a specific scene but instead proposes an abstract space where forms represent ideas such as balance, continuity, and harmony. It embodies the modernist hope that abstraction could transcend language and geography, resonating with collectors interested in the evolution of twentieth-century art. For those exploring abstract or Bauhaus influences, this piece stands as a testament to the era’s ideals.

Style & Characteristics

The composition is structured around a rectilinear grid, with pronounced black lines dividing the surface into compartments. Within these sections, simplified geometric shapes and emblematic marks create a dynamic interplay between order and spontaneity.

The palette features warm neutrals and browns, accented by touches of red, blue, and yellow, lending the work a balanced yet vibrant energy. The overall effect is contemplative and graphic, making it appealing for admirers of abstract wall art and those drawn to modernist design.

In Interior Design

This abstract art print suits living rooms, offices, or entryways where clean lines and structure are desired. Its grid-based composition harmonizes with mid-century modern and Scandinavian interiors, as well as architectural shelving.

Accent the artwork’s primary colors with decor in blue, red, or ochre, or maintain a serene atmosphere with neutral tones. It also pairs well with Bauhaus-inspired posters and can be elegantly framed using options from our frames collection.
