About the Artist

Michel Liebeaux signs this cycling scene with the name Mich, a compact mark that appears near the lower right wheel. That signature identifies a French caricaturist whose posters often stretched gesture into visual comedy. Here, his imagination serves La Cyclette rather than a theatrical character: the rider’s tall hat and animated grin give the bicycle advertisement a human spark. Liebeaux turns a commercial commission into a small story of companionship and movement, making the 1909 image feel like a vintage poster about shared pleasure. That same wit gives this French wall art a readable presence.

The Artwork

The title, Sur la route du bonheur!, gives the campaign its central promise: cycling can lead to happiness. La Cyclette used that promise to sell a bicycle as part of a desirable way of life, not simply as a means of getting from one address to another. The 1909 advertising poster addresses a period when personal mobility carried associations of independence and leisure. Its lower copy links the emotional slogan to practical buying questions, reassuring the intended customer that pleasure need not sacrifice usefulness. This vintage print records how bicycle marketing translated modern transport into shared optimism.

Style & Characteristics

Against a charcoal-black field, a large orange disc encloses the cyclists and sets their pale clothing into relief. The man rides in a black suit beneath a tall top hat, while the woman leans forward in a light dress with a flowing veil-like shape behind her. Their blue bicycles overlap across the lower half of the circle; orange tyres and thin spokes keep the scene in motion. Yellow capitals at the top repeat in the La Cyclette lettering below, where the circular logo interrupts the name. Liebeaux draws with crisp outlines and caricatural exaggeration, especially in the man’s grin and the woman’s turned profile. That sequence gives the vintage print its quick visual rhythm.

In Interior Design

In a sunlit apartment entry, hang this vertical poster above a narrow oak console, where morning light can pick up the orange disc. A slim black frame echoes the charcoal ground and keeps the yellow lettering legible from the doorway. The tall format gives the wall an upward pull, while the paired riders introduce motion beside a quiet threshold. A matte fine art print finish lets the dark field remain calm and the linework stay readable. This vintage poster gives restrained interior decoration a precise Belle Époque reference without overwhelming the furniture. The result is home decor with a specific story rather than a generic accent.
