About the Artist

Maurice Pillard Verneuil was a French designer and illustrator renowned for his influential role in the Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the twentieth century. His work bridged the worlds of fine art and applied design, as he created pattern books and decorative plates that inspired generations of artisans and interior decorators. Verneuil’s approach was to reinterpret nature, transforming plants and animals into stylized motifs that could be adapted for a wide range of decorative purposes.

His innovative vision helped shape the visual language of Art Nouveau, emphasizing organic forms and harmonious compositions. Verneuil’s legacy endures in the way he merged artistic creativity with practical design, making his work a touchstone for collectors and admirers of decorative arts.

The Artwork

Produced in 1897, this illustration is part of Verneuil’s portfolio Lanimal dans la Decoration, a collection created as a resource for designers during the flourishing Art Nouveau era. The portfolio was conceived to provide inspiration for textiles, wallpapers, and architectural details, reflecting the period’s fascination with the beauty and symbolism of the natural world.

This particular plate pairs a red mullet with flowing strands of algae, capturing the era’s interest in aquatic life as a metaphor for abundance and vitality. The artwork exemplifies the broader European trend of integrating natural motifs into decorative arts, making it a natural fit for those interested in sea and ocean wall art and the history of ornamental design.

Style & Characteristics

The composition is distinctly decorative, with the fish and sea plants rendered in bold outlines and rhythmic curves that emphasize pattern over realism. Flat areas of color and subtle shading give the print a clean, graphic quality characteristic of Art Nouveau design. The palette features fresh greens, warm beige, and vibrant orange accents, bringing energy and balance to the scene.

The overall mood is tranquil yet dynamic, with a sense of movement created by the intertwining forms. This style appeals to those who appreciate Art Nouveau animal imagery and green toned prints with a coastal influence.

In Interior Design

This poster is especially well-suited for kitchens or dining spaces, where its marine theme adds a lively and refined touch. It also complements hallways or reading nooks, providing a cultured accent without overpowering the decor. The artwork pairs beautifully with light woods, cane, and brass finishes.

For a cohesive look, combine it with sand, cream, and olive textiles, and echo the orange accent in decorative objects. On a gallery wall, it bridges classic art prints and modern pattern design, and is elegantly displayed in simple frames from the frames collection.
