About the Artist
By an unknown artist, this Deauville railway travel poster places ETAT, the French state railway network, three times across its top. Its routes connected Paris to the Normandy coast, making Deauville an accessible escape from the capital. The commercial setting of this vintage print is clear: railway advertising sold the destination as much as the journey. In 1931, Deauville already had decades of resort culture behind it, supported by its casino and racecourses. Here, an anonymous commission opens a window onto the partnership between rail travel and seaside leisure in interwar France.
The Artwork
A holiday begins before the suitcase is packed. For the prospective passenger, Deauville promised a temporary change of life, from the routines of the city to days organised around the shore. This 1931 French railway poster invited travellers to imagine that transition and choose the train to make it happen. Deauville had developed as a fashionable resort during the nineteenth century, and its reputation still shaped the invitation.
